Ajisen Sushi, Plaza Singapura (Dec 21, 2008)

I thought this was quite cute. Something like shabu shabu in a paper pot. The taste was so so... a bit too sweet for my liking but it was cute. Come to expect less from franchised japanese restaurants...

Recommended by a friend... we went on a search for this Korean restaurant in Chinatown. I know of a few Korean restaurant along or near Duxton Road and Maxwell market but certainly, one in the middle of Chinatown was news to me. After going in circles around Temple Street and Smith Street, I decided to call my friend. Apparently it is situated on the next street i.e. Mosque Street. We were there early so the restaurant was empty. One of those typical restaurants in Chinatown. Not very big. Fits about 10 tables inside and they had a few tables outside as well.  We ordered the "Samgyeopsal" - bbq pork loin, "Kimchi jjige" - kimchi spicy soup and "Ojjingeo Bokkeum" - stir fried spicy squid with cold buckwheat noodle.      I found the kimchi spicy soup a tat sour but according to my Korean friend, this was quite good by Korean standards. I was staying at the Hyatt after moving out from my apartment. Not in a cheery mood. Feeling extremely sad having to move out of my apartment of 4-years. I am going to miss The Light.  So, I was in for a lonesome dinner. Saturday night, it would be difficult to get a seat at Nanbantei but I was lucky. The waitress gave me a counter seat right at the corner - fit for my depressing self.  Nanbantei is a japanese grill or yakitori restaurant but they also serve sushi, sashimi etc. Quite an extensive menu but the restaurant is quite small. Top floor on Far East Plaza. I ordered "set A" - a-12 stick yakitori meal... comes with rice, miso soup and vege sticks with miso dip and a potato salad as starter. Always fascinated with the salt throwing technique. The yakitori is cooked over an open charcoal fire grill and to season it, the yakitori experts throws salt onto the skewers from a distance... ha ha, if I am the chef, I will most certainly have the entire floor covered with salt b...

Seoul 12-16 Sep 2008 (Part 4)

Day 4, Sep 16 - Lunch (Bulgogi) My flight was at 4pm. Had to be at the Incheon airport by 2pm latest. My friend, Ryan was kind enough to take half day leave to pick me up and send me to the airport. My morning was spend blogging.  Anyway, we reached the airport before 2pm. Checked in my luggage and went for lunch at a korean restaurant on the 2nd floor of the departure hall. I ordered the bulgogi while Ryan ordered the dry buckwheat noodle. The bulgogi was rather average. Ryan's cold noodle was not bad. Apparently, the restaurant is reputable for good cold noodle.   The flight back felt shorter. Dunno why... I had a great trip. Hope to be back in Seoul soon.

Nothing beats mum's cooking... simple, yet satisfying. Steam sea bass, boiled pork rib soup with "kot" (in cantonese: some kind of root used for soup), stir-fry asparagus with prawns and steamed wax chicken (huh? this last one was not a norm; Where did she get this from?)
