Korean BBQ Galbi (Dec 26, 2008)

Even though the fusion xmas dinner was great but I had to have my share of galbi. I need my meat. 

So, after quite a hectic day running errands in preparation for our trip to Mount Soerak tomorrow, we stopped by a BBQ restaurant in Seongnam for dinner. 

I love having my bbq meat with lettuce and kimchi. Don't know why but I think it is a complete meal by itself. Meat, greens, kimchi flavor, add some roasted garlic if you like, or even some mushrooms. Heavenly. 

I was also introduced to a "crab kimchi". its marinated crab in Korean bean paste. The crabs are raw but I think after marinating for a period of time, it really doesn't matter anymore. It was nice. : I

I am ashamed to announce that this is the second posting on the blog for the year. Neglect is definitely the crime and I am caught red-handed. Well, I hate to come up with excuses but I really do have a few good reasons but anyway, I won't dwell on them. Just say, that I like to move-on and focus on the present, rather than to ponder over the past or over any milk spilled over. Anyway, I recall some 4 months ago and I had to verify that by checking my whatsapp message from a friend calling for accomplices, she called "porkers" for an assault at this certain dining place call Kompassion. Hort Park (along Alexandra Road) was less than a year old. Hence, Kha would probably be the same or even newer. Kha is a Thai fusion restaurant, inside the Hort Park. Not sure how many restaurants they have in there but it is not difficult to find it once you are in Hort park. I was there for a meeting and my business partners bought lunch. We had the set menu. Started with some appetizers, soup, followed by rice served with several dishes and then dessert. The appetizers were barbequed chicken on bamboo with ngam jai dressing and thai salad and thai crab and prawn cake with thai salad and sweet chilli sauce... in simpler english, chicken satay and thai crab cakes. The chicken satay was tasty... marinated with lemongrass as how the Thais would do it but the Thai salad was not much of a salad.  I was expecting some green thai mango but I can't make out what it was as it was covered with this pink colored sauce (tasted like thousand island dressing). Sekai No Yamachan Izakaya - Chicken wings!

Izakaya means a comfortable lepak place to grab a drink and light meal. In Japan, it's part of their culture to have drinks with colleagues after a work to wind down and to relax. Now in Malaysia, you see more and more izakaya s sprouting in the Klang Valley to cater to not only hard working white collars but just about anyone who fancies a place to hang out with friends to enjoy a drink. Sekai No Yamachan means "The World of Yamachan" and Yamachan is the founder of this restaurant, famous for its fried chicken wings which is coated with a special sauce and pepper. Yamachan is from Nagoya and the restaurant was founded in 1981. The chicken wings are dry and peppery. You can order them in 5s, 10, 50s and even a hundred. There are also combos to go with drinks. Oui! Oui! Oui! Le Bouchon!

 Boss and colleague from Singapore was in town for meetings. I agreed to have dinner with them and their preference was western cuisine. So, I googled the internet for "good western restaurants in KL" and a few familiar names popped up. Frangipani, Le Bouchon... some not quite western ones like Top Hat, Bonton and one which I was not quite familiar with, Hakka Republic. I have been to Frangipani and since, I am totally in the dark about Hakka Republic, so I decided to opt for Le Bouchon. I checked out their website and found out that the restaurant was voted by the Tatler magazine for 8 consecutive years from 2003 till 2010 to be the best restaurant in town. It took about half an hour from the office because of usual peak hour traffic even though, Changkat Bukit Bintang is really not that far away from KLCC. I chanced upon this restaurant as I was visiting the Apple centre on AMK St 64. I am not sure if I can call it a german restaurant but it certainly does have the european feel to it. So, what more but to try the pork knuckle. The staff also recommended the grilled chicken and sausage gumbo. The gumbo came with freshly baked bread. This great. How I wish all restaurants freshly bake their bread. Bread out of the oven is a great accompaniment to any dishes.  The gumbo, I thought was rather bland. I normally do not add salt to my food but this time I couldn't resist. I guess maybe, it is to cater to more health conscious customers. So, I won't fault the chef for it. The gumbo I know is made with vegetable and sausage... well that's the american version that I have tasted at least.
