Nathalie Gourmet Studio
The last time I caught up with Kimmy was probably a year ago. Though I thought it was much longer that is when I was in Singapore but negative, we did catch up for a bowl of pork ball noodle at Win Heng Seng, Jalan Imbi last year when she had to attend a conference in town. Kim works in bandar Utama.
Well, better late and ever than never. It was good to see Kimmy and she is going places and making good progress up the corporate ladder. Now, she is driven around by a driver. When we last met, I thought her mini cooper was cool but now I am convinced that being driven around is much, much cooler...
Thanks to Sandy, who suggested the reunion and also this venue. I met up with Sandy a week ago. She is working on her new project and she consulted me for my views because I love food. She is contemplating on starting a cafe and is looking around for a suitable location. She suggested Nathalie Gourmet Studio for dinner but it was closed last week and we ended up in The Plan B. No puns intended. *chuckle & snort*
Anyway, we finally sat down to order at 8:15pm. We waited about 45 minuted for Kimmy, who was what they call fashionably late, which I resent because she has a driver and should be punctual. We ordered a starter each and our mains.
My starter was the half cooked egg, with porcini mushroom soup and crusted cheese choux pastry. The blended porcini mushroom soup at first consumption was fairly bland but both Sandy and Kimmy attested that it was not. On the contrary, it was very pungent. The crusted puff pastry added the saltiness. Though the egg didn't really influence that flavor but it did provide the rich soup a little more texture and creaminess, which was almost not existent even though it was mushroom.
Sandy had a grapefruit, salmon, avocado and garden greens salad which was very refreshing. Grapefruit gave the dish an utter bitterness but at the same time the exuberayting freshness. Kimmy had the ravioli with parsley cream sauce. The sauce was overpowering and though it was well presented, I found this the least appealing amongst the 3 starters.
I chose the lamb shoulder with roasted cherry tomatoes, chick pea and garlic. The lamb was well cooked and was very soft. The taste was however a tinge too gamey or "lamey". Could use a bit more seasoning. The Arctic char fish was kind of lost, swimming in a thick snow bed of whipped potato which was drizzled with garlic and olive oil. I found this to be a weird combination. Normally, whipped potato is served with meat because the potatoes can absorb the juice and flavor. So, I reckon the dish could use a bit more fibre and have spinach or some greens as an accompaniment instead. I think the winning main dish this time, was the oat and barley crusted salmon. Imagine eating muesli bar with grilled salmon... No, it is really quite delicious. The crusted top kept the salmon moist and the oil from the salmon gave the muesli crusty added crunchiness.
Sandy was too full to have dessert but both Kimmy and I ordered. I had the lemon tart meringue and lemon grass ice cream and Kimmy had the grapefruit sorbet. The lemon grass ice cream was a winner... Nice, subtle flavor. The longish tart biscuit with lemon and meringue drops neatly lined on top and with droplets of chocolate side lining the centerpiece was charming. It was a very cute presentation and I would award full points for creativity. Though it was a mouthful, trying to taste them together but it was delicious.
The bill came up to RM170 per person. Well, we ordered wine and tea as well.
Highly recommended for french cuisine lovers. Overall, it was an eye opener - demonstration of the varied french cooking techniques and excellent presentation style.
Please also check out the cooking classes at the gourmet studio. Half day courses starts from RM70 to RM220.
