Brunching Antipodeon Cafe
I was planning to have lunch as it was close to noon but when I asked for a recommendation, our friendly waiter without any hesitation recommended the Big Breakfast. A quick peer across to the neighboring tables and realized that they too subscribed to their friendly waiter's recommendation. Well, I succumbed but longing for something sweet, I ordered the banana pancake as well which was on the menu board for today's special - of course alongside, the Big Breakfast (what else?).
It was a Sunday and as expected everyone was brunching or having a very late breakfast. It was busy and a tinge claustrophob-ish as the tables were arrange very close together. Families, crying babies and surprisingly a fair mix of locals and expatriate clientele.
Our order came in about 15 minutes, which was fairly quick considering that I noticed a lady on another table who waited for about the same time but came much earlier. Maybe, it was wise to order the Big Breakfast which came first and then the banana pancake about a minute later.
Anyway, big breakfast was big breakfast; creamy fluffy omelet, slice of lightly buttered and toasted baguette, 3 slices of streaky bacon, mashed potato hashed and browned on the top with some herbs and a generous portion of quartered champignon mushrooms! It was what I would expect of a Big Breakfast but it was not out-of-this-world but it was a decent and a generous plate of breakfast.
The banana pancake was less generous. Three slices of banana flavored pancakes perfectly shaped probably with the help of a round mould, some decorative slices of bananas and fruits at the four corners of the plate and a small saucer of toffee to pour over the pancake. The pancakes were thick, almost like your good old malay kuih bom pisang with some crispy bits on the edges which tasted rather delicious. I would have preferred a thicker toffee and not the syrupy one and a nice ball of vanilla ice-cream and some whipped cream would definitely make this a much nicer treat.
Anyhow, the coffee didn't disappoint. I remember antipodean did serve good coffee and it was indeed good. A great way to start your Sunday for all you late risers - a big breakfast, some banana pancakes and a great cup of coffee.
