A Warm Welcome to Wagner

Introduction passage found in the menu...

"In "Dribbdebach", as we call the part of Frankfurt South of the River main, in the beautiful Sachsenhausen district, our restaurant awaits you with the traditional atmosphere of Frankfurt's apple wine culture.

This is the place to get together with friends, acquaintances, business partners, travellers from all over the world in order to have a glass of apple wine (a "Schoppen", as it is called and other specialties which are typical of Frankfurt.

Stop by and enjoy the unique atmosphere."

Established since 1931, Adolf Wagner is a woody tavern and institution of traditional German food in Frankfurt, famous for its apple wine and traditional Frankfurt cuisine. Highly recommended by Lonely Planet, Tripadvisor, Fodor and other travel guides.

It takes about 15 minutes by tram to Sachsenhausen area and the tavern is a minute walk from the tram stop. The signboard is clearly visible from the roadside and a short passageway leads you to the tavern.

The interior of the tavern consist largely of wooden beams and panels, long tables, round tables, benches and chairs. Above the panels were large murals of scenes in the busy tavern. When you enter, the bar is on the left, again made of wood with wooden shelves neatly stacked with glasses and porcelain urns on the top. The tavern certainly felt and looks its age but it exudes a warm and cosy ambience. Tables were filled quickly for this Sunday brunch, mainly locals and from their accent, a couple from China were seated nearby and then another from Singapore a few tables away.

The burly and bearish waiter dressed in a white shirt and black pants was attentive and friendly. He spoke enough English to take our drink orders. Offered us the English menu and went about serving other customers. He came back a minute later with our apple wine. It tasted like a very light beer minus the bitterness and froth. It didn't taste like wine because it lacks the intensity nor did it taste like cider because it wasn't sweet but it was a nice and refreshing drink. I learned later that if you have it at the bar standing, you pay €0.20 cheaper from the regular price of €1.80.

Browsing through them menu, I reminded myself not to order your regular German tavern meals such as the pork knuckle, schnitzel and instead try the local Frankfurt cuisine. In the menu, it has a section on soups, weekly specials, schnitzel, beef or veal dishes and lo and behold... Frankfurt Specialties. Though the grilled pork shoulder with sauerkraut and grilled "rippchen" (smoked pork chops) with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes were very tempting, I chose "krautwickel" meat filled cabbage rolls with bacon gravy and mashed potatoes and the today's special sautéed veal cutlet with mushroom sauce, home fried potatoes and side salad.

Krautwickel is a bavarian dish made from cabbage with meat filling, normally beef mixed with chopped cabbage, spices, parsley, onion and eggs. The meat filling is quite similar to a meat loaf but the preparation time is much longer as it involves searing the krautwickels and then cooking it in simmering broth for up to two hours basted from time to time. So, this is a fairly healthy meal and tasted absolutely delicious.

The veal cutlet is a much more basic dish and of course, less popular than the veal schnitzel. The meat is cut into strips and stir fry with butter and served with "hash browns" and garnished with chopped parsley. The meat is well cooked and tender and combined with the generous serving of fried potatoes, makes a perfect meal to fuel a day of hard labor.

The meal came up to around €25 for two person plus 19% service tax. My friendly and bearish waiter was disappointed that I didn't have dessert (apple strudel) but I really couldn't eat another bite. Here's a photo of us (and a photo bomb). This is a perfect stop in Frankfurt for a taste of local cuisine and to soak in the traditional German tavern atmosphere. A stop not to be missed.
