Veg Fish Farm Thai Food

Heighten fear of another lockdown and out of sheer desperation, off to a road trip we went. Only about 45 minutes away from KL, a drive to Semenyih dam was a brilliant idea. Escapade to the nature and a dinner appointment in a farm. How delightful?

It was about 5:30pm when we drove off. Traffic was heavy. Great minds think alike. No time to waste. Let’s make this weekend count.

The dam was nice and there is a monkey hangout spot when you turn right at the junction towards Semenyih/Kajang. There are several spots which you can stop your car to catch a glimpse of the lake/dam.

Then we backtracked for 20 minutes to have dinner at the Veg Fish Farm Thai Food restaurant. The restaurant has been around for 20 years and is situated at this current location for the past 15 years. The story is vegetable owner hired a Thai couple to work on the farm and Thai wifey helped in the kitchen instead and started dishing out butt kicking Thai food. So, Chinese boss decided to open a restaurant and appointed Thai wifey head chef, serving scrumptious Thai food made with fresh local produce from his own farm.

So, yes it is a farm. It has a fish pond in the middle. Quite a sizable pond, mind you and you need a motorboat to transport your wares around. No kidding.

When we arrived, it was too dark to be able to see the farm but the restaurant was brightly lit. You are welcomed by the tanks of fishes and crates of crabs. You can turn left or right when you enter the restaurant because they have tables on both sides and the restaurant goes around to surround the pond.

The menu is typically Thai and offers extensive choice of seafood. Local produce from the farm like ayam kampung (free range chicken) and vegetable dishes are prominently featured as well.

Here’s what we ordered:

1) Steamed squid in lime sauce

2) Steamed prawns (freshwater prawns)

3) 4 heavenly kings - stir fry vege comprising of winged beans, petai, long beans and brinjal

4) Boiled cockles

5) Griled oysters

6) fried tilapia with bo-lan sauce

I highly recommend the fried tilapia with bo-lan sauce.  Bo lan is a play of words to mean ancient or vintage in Thai (Not the award-winning Thai restaurant in Bangkok). The sauce is tangy, fragrant and from my guess, made of shallot, lemongrass, carrot, garlic and tamarind. The vegetable dishes were very good too. The oysters and prawns were fresh but the oysters have a bitter after taste. For me, the cockles were slightly over cooked.

Overall, I think the food was decent. For our order, it came up to about RM80 per pax including drinks and dessert. We also ordered todi (palm wine) which was very popular, and apparently goes well with Guinness stout. Never knew that.

I would definitely return again. Love the environment and service was attentive and friendly. Perfect for a family outing.

Been there. Good food. Just don't like the mosquitoes. Leave your shorts behind and put on a pair of jeans instead 😀

Yes, jeans and long pants would be ideal. ;D Besides the food, I love the rustic setting and the idea of transporting your food across the lake in a little bum boat. Rather clever.
