Bun cha & Vegetarian Summer roll - Super Saigon, TTDI
I was researching food that you should avoid for gout and found out that contradicting to my limited knowledge, soy products are actually not bad for gout. So, eating tofu and soy based faux meat is actually permissible and is unlikely to cause a gout attack which is a revelation to me. It is still on a trial and error basis but I think being able to eat soy products does open up options.
Lean meat such as chicken (without skin) is also fine, if taken in small quantity. The resource in the internet regarding recipes or diet for someone with gout is often relating to western recipes. So, for us living in Malaysia which prefers Asian meals would have much difficulty deciding what to cook or eat.
If you are craving for Vietnamese food and considering something healthy, you can try Super Saigon's lemongrass chicken bun cha and the vegetarian summer rolls.
Bun cha is a traditionally a vermicelli salad with grilled pork meatballs, fresh herbs such as mint, lettuce, bean sprout with a lime fish sauce dressing but Super Saigon is a halal restaurant and instead of pork, you have grilled lemongrass chicken. The portion is generous and dressing is packed separately when you order delivery. The regular bun cha with grilled pork would be around 540 calories and with the lemongrass chicken alternative, it will bring it down to around 400 (just a guess!).
The other item I ordered was the vegetarian summer roll, which comes with two rolls per portion and a dipping sauce. Rice paper roll stuffed with vermicelli, lettuce and tofu replacing the usual shrimp or chicken. The roll is huge and is too big to fit in your regular mouth and the lettuce in the filling is chopped, making it rather messy to eat. Without the sauce, the roll is rather bland. Around 110 calories per roll, though I probably won't order it again but it is still a very healthy meal.
I would however order the Vietnamese ice coffee again because it is so delicious. Another 150 calories because of the condensed milk but it is definitely worth it. Why not?
