Recommended by a friend... we went on a search for this Korean restaurant in Chinatown. I know of a few Korean restaurant along or near Duxton Road and Maxwell market but certainly, one in the middle of Chinatown was news to me. After going in circles around Temple Street and Smith Street, I decided to call my friend. Apparently it is situated on the next street i.e. Mosque Street. We were there early so the restaurant was empty. One of those typical restaurants in Chinatown. Not very big. Fits about 10 tables inside and they had a few tables outside as well.  We ordered the "Samgyeopsal" - bbq pork loin, "Kimchi jjige" - kimchi spicy soup and "Ojjingeo Bokkeum" - stir fried spicy squid with cold buckwheat noodle.      I found the kimchi spicy soup a tat sour but according to my Korean friend, this was quite good by Korean standards. Nanbantei, Far East Plaza (Dec 20, 2008)

I was staying at the Hyatt after moving out from my apartment. Not in a cheery mood. Feeling extremely sad having to move out of my apartment of 4-years. I am going to miss The Light.  So, I was in for a lonesome dinner. Saturday night, it would be difficult to get a seat at Nanbantei but I was lucky. The waitress gave me a counter seat right at the corner - fit for my depressing self.  Nanbantei is a japanese grill or yakitori restaurant but they also serve sushi, sashimi etc. Quite an extensive menu but the restaurant is quite small. Top floor on Far East Plaza. I ordered "set A" - a-12 stick yakitori meal... comes with rice, miso soup and vege sticks with miso dip and a potato salad as starter. Always fascinated with the salt throwing technique. The yakitori is cooked over an open charcoal fire grill and to season it, the yakitori experts throws salt onto the skewers from a distance... ha ha, if I am the chef, I will most certainly have the entire floor covered with salt b...

Nothing beats mum's cooking... simple, yet satisfying. Steam sea bass, boiled pork rib soup with "kot" (in cantonese: some kind of root used for soup), stir-fry asparagus with prawns and steamed wax chicken (huh? this last one was not a norm; Where did she get this from?)

De Maw Chinese Restaurant (Next to PGRM, Cheras)

De Maw is fairly new... I think probably less than 2 years old and the chef was from one of the notable 5-star hotel. Some say Mandarin, some say the former Ming Court on Jalan Ampang. Though fairly new but it has already created quite a reputation i.e. extremely huge serving, great taste and reasonable price. It is not hard to find. From town head towards Cheras via the old Cheras Road. The easiest and least confusing way would be to take the Jalan Pudu. If you are in town, from Pudu Jail, head towards Cheras until you pass Jaya Jusco at Taman Maluri. Then keep left and when you see PGRM but do not turn into the road leading into Taman Shamelin. Instead just go straight into the secondary road. De Maw is the first shop lot on your left. The restaurant is air-conditioned but it seats probably around 10 tables. So, reservation is a definite must.  The must-try in De Maw.... the shark's fin soup... No offense to our animal protection activist friends but if you do not mind, the soup ...

Wild Yeast Bakery

One of my favorite café for sourdough bread. A limited menu that revolves around the trademark sourdough and croissant but quality ingredients to go with your favorite cuppa. Helmed by bassonist and sound engineer turned baker-preneur, Terence Chong is happy that business is doing well despite the lockdown and is looking forward to the recovery. Terence began his sourdough venture as a partner with Tommy Le Baker circa 2013 and went on his own in another location in Jalan SS17 before moving to this quaint neighborhood in Jalan SS22 just before the pandemic in 2020. During my last visit (4 September 2021), the cafe is still not open for dine-in but it should be soon. Nevertheless, business was brisk with customers making a beeline to order take-always. I ordered the vegan options - Egg Mayo and Brie sandwich. Very hearty sandwiches and absolutely delicious.
